Founded on the vision that every child deserves the best possible start to life, Early Start is a world leading collaborative initiative bringing together academic research, tertiary education programs and community engagement.
Developed in response to a new wave of research confirming the critical impact of education on children’s health, development and life outcomes, Early Start will radically transform teaching, research and community engagement in the higher education sector.
The vision for Early Start became a reality in 2012 when the University of Wollongong received a $31 million grant from the Federal Government’s Education Infrastructure Fund to build the Early Start Facility.
Located on the UOW’s Wollongong campus, it includes specialist teaching and research spaces, the Early Start Discovery Space, administrative offices and technical facilities, and is a hub for connection with our 41 Early Start Engagement Centres – early childhood education and care centres based in regional and rural NSW. The overall facility is designed over three levels and has a gross floor area of 9188 square metres.
When Early Start was in the planning phase, UOW received its largest ever philanthropic gift from the Abbott Foundation, specifically for the establishment of a venture that provided a destination for families with young children to participate together in exciting learning experiences – the Early Start Discovery Space.
