As the weather warms up and nature comes out of its slumber, we take a closer look at the wonderful world of colour. Keep curious minds busy these school holidays with an incredible 13 workshops to choose from, plus FREE daily activities for all ages.

BOOKABLE WORKSHOPS

An accompanying adult is required to attend all workshops (and encouraged to participate!) Costs for workshops are additional to Discovery Space entry.

Bird Safari – SOLD OUT
Go on an adventure around the beautiful University of Wollongong campus as we search for colourful birds, big and small!
Date: Tuesday 1 October
Time: 10.30am – 11.30 am
Ages: 5+

Price: FREE after entry, however bookings are required

NOTE: This workshop will involve leaving the Early Start Discovery Space. Children will be required to bring their own hats and wet weather wear in case of light rain. In the case of heavy rain this workshop will be cancelled. 


Richard Crookes Construction Site Visit
Come with us on a very special tour to see how buildings are made from the ground up. Wear your hard hat and vest and watch builders from Richard Crookes Constructions use specialist machinery.

Making Macrame
If you can tie your shoelaces then you can macramé! Utilise your knot-tying skills, string and our colourful beads to create a macramé wall hanging that will add a splash of colour to your wall.

Ages: 6+ (need to be able to tie a knot)

NOTE: This workshop is suitable for children who are already able to tie knots.


Colourful Knitting
Learn how to knit a colourful string creation by decorating and using your very own Knitting Nelly frame!

Bottle Biomes
Learn about how our Earth’s biomes work then make and decorate your own bottle biome from recycled materials.

Colourful Plant Pots
Learn how to care for plants and take one home in a personalised colourful pot designed and decorated by you.

Colour Changing Sensory Bottles with Shellharbour Library
Create your own colour changing sensory bottle. Learn how mixing liquids of different consistency and colour can allow you to make a colour changing extravaganza.

Collage Your Environment – SOLD OUT
Be inspired by our beautiful garden and create a reflective artwork that combines line work, vibrant colours and collage techniques.

Comics Alive!
Calling all comic authors!  Join us to create your own superhero comic and watch your hero come to life through the spinning motions of a zoetrope.

DROP-IN WORKSHOPS

Team Quoll
Visit our campsite and learn all about Quolls with Kat, our expert from UOW’s Team Quoll. Find out about this unique marsupial, where they live, and how we can help to look after them.

Design A Box House
Design, create and decorate your very own box house from recycled materials. What will you include in yours?

Sustainable Houses
Experience the award-winning Desert Rose House through augmented reality. Children will have the opportunity to explore the net-zero energy home designed, built and operated by students from UOW and TAFE NSW.

Colourful Collage
Drop in and use our multi-coloured recycled collage paper to create your own collage!

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Join us for daily activities running every hour. No need to book, just drop-in for some FUN! There will be mime classes, parachute play, yoga, storytime, arts & crafts and lots of colourful play for all ages. All activities are free after entry.

Storytime 10am
Join us in the Book Nook and pull up a cushion as we read a range of classic stories plus added activities to get our listeners involved while instilling a love of reading. Suggested ages: all ages

Time to Perform 11am
Take centre stage as we explore dramatic play and self-expression through mime class. Or put your performing arts skills to the test in our Voice, Body, Action session. Suggested ages: 2 to 10 years

Thinking & Making 12pm
Let your imagination take the lead as we design and make Teddy Bear a new home with our Big Blue Blocks. Or join us for some parachute play as we launch different toys into the air. Suggested ages: 3 to 10 years

Get Active 1pm
Put the screens away – we’re on a mission to get you moving! You might find yourself doing some stretchy yoga or get your heart racing in the Superhero exercise class! Suggested ages: 2 to 10 years

Out & About 2pm
We’ll be exploring all our senses as we step into our nature-play Discovery Gardens – what can we see, touch, smell? Or explore your inner green thumb and learn about plants and how to care for them. Get your watering cans ready. Suggested ages: 2 to 10 years

Explorers 3pm
Aye aye Captain! Get onboard the ship for a round of Captain’s Orders. Be sure to turn your listening ears on. Or work as a team as we become Train Travel Guides, get your ticket, follow the map and set off on your destination. Suggested ages: 2 to 10 years

Art 10am – 2pm
We’ll be exploring colour through collage making or watercolour painting. Find your inner artistic spark. Suggested ages: 1 to 10 years
